Why? That’s a LONG story that I won’t get into. However, if you must know you can read about it in the revious entry titled Computer Mishap. <br /><br />I called this entry <b>Scary Times Have Come and Gone</b> because that’s exactly what the past few days have been for me. <br /><br />Let me start from the beginning.......<br /><br />Friday afternoon I was helping Mommy with chores around the house.<br /><br /><i>helping = getting in the way and causing mischief</i><br /><br />Mommy was in her room putting away the laundry when I came bounding into the room, jumped on the bed and did my happy dance with my squeaky AirDog tennis ball in my mouth. I dropped it on the bed and barked at Mommy, “Let’s play! Throw the ball! Throw the ball! THROW THE BALL!!!!” <br /><br />She grabbed the ball and I trembled with excitement, my eyes glued to the ball in her hand. “THROW THE BALL!!” I pleaded. <br /><br />Mommy launched the ball out the door and into the hallway. I flew from the bed and after it. “FETCH! FETCH!! FETCH!!!,” I woofed as I chased after and retrieved my most prized and sacred possession. I ran back into the bedroom, leapt onto the bed with my chest puffed out as much as I could make it, so proud of my perfect demonstration of ‘fetch’. I dropped the ball and looked to Mommy. “AGAIN!!!!!”<br /><br />Again she grabbed my ball and tossed it for me. We repeated this over and over again. I’m certain Mommy must have been nauseous from throwing my ball so much. BOL BOL BOL <br /><br />The last time she threw the ball and I came back with my prize on her bed, she looked at me with a look of concern on her face and gave me the “drop down” command which means something is going on because she wants me to freeze. I dropped down on the bed and she grabbed me and started looking at me all over.<br /><br />What had happened was that she noticed a smear of blood on the bed comforter. She looked me over and noticed that I was bleeding from my paw.<br /><br />Mommy held me and wouldn’t let me go. “Mommy let me go please, I want to play more fetch.” I tried to wiggle my way free, but she wouldn’t let go. UGH! I wiggled and wiggled, but I couldn’t get free. <br /><br />At this point she called in reinforcement... Uncle Matthew.<br /><br />She instructed him to get a towel from the closet and bring it right away. In came Uncle Matthew with the towel. Mommy wrapped it around my paw. It was at this point that I realized that something was wrong with me so I stopped wiggling and let her do what she was going to to me ... surrender. She then told Uncle Matthew to get the First Aid kit and the phone. He did as he was told.<br /><br />Mommy took the towel from my paw. The bleeding had slowed, but had not stopped yet. She took a good look at it. I heard her mumble to herself something about how had I managed to cut myself. Then she looked closer and exclaimed that I had a growth on my lower leg. She touched it and looked at me. She asked me if it hurt. It didn’t hurt. I didn’t even realize that it was there. <br /><br />She then handed me to Uncle Matthew and asked him to hold me while she bandaged my paw. I sat still and allowed them to do whatever they were going to. I can be a good girl when I need to be. They bandaged my paw together and then she told Matthew to lay me on the bed while she called the Vet. <br /><br />I laid there and listened intently to the one sided conversation she had with the Vet. She made an appointment for me first thing Saturday morning to have it looked at.<br /><br />When she got off the phone she looked at me and said poor Nali. "WHAT! ?! I’m fine! I’ll even show you how fine I am! " <br /><br />I jumped up and grabbed by ball and took off out of the room and into the hall. Mommy came after me demanding that I get back into bed and `take it easy`. UGH! I did as I was told. <br /><br />Despite my pleading and numerous attempts to demonstrate that I was fine, Mommy didn’t buy it! So, I had to lay and be still all night! HUMFH! Not the exciting and fun filled night I had planned on having! <br /><br />The next morning Mommy and I went in the truck to the Vet! I love going for rides in the truck and I also love to go visit Dr. M.. We got there and found out that Dr. M. had been promoted to a position at the emergency clinic. I was bummed that I couldn’t see her, but hay for her too. <br /><br />I was escorted into the exam room by a tech who I didn’t really like too much. He asked Mommy all kinds of questions, looked me over, shoved that cold thing up my *ahem* butt *ahem* and then looked at the growth on my leg. I was not too impressed and glad when he left the room. I looked to Mommy and woofed at her, "Who’s that Chump? I don’t like him." She petted me and told me to clam down and be a good girl. *sigh*<br /><br />Soon after, in came Dr. K.. She was nice enough. She petted me and told me I am a good girl. She then started to ask Mommy questions and examine me. She looked at the growth on my leg and told Mommy she had seen these many times. It’s a type of tumour! <br /><br />I couldn’t believe what I just heard. I looked to Mommy. Her eyes were filling with tears. I put my paws on her shoulders and gave her a kiss. "It’s ok Mommy. I’ll get to the bottom of this..."<br /><br />The Vet, whom I was now beginning to become sceptical of, told Mommy that she was 90% certain that it is benign. However, she said that we should do a cytology test to be sure. Mommy agreed to the test. She said to me that we have to be certain. Dr. K. Left the room and came back with reinforcements... the Chump and the tech lady that I usually see and love!<br /><br />The Chump grabbed me and put me into a body lock! I squirmed and tried to get free but he wouldn’t let me go. Mommy touched me and told me; to settle and that it would be alright, that I just needed to stay still. <br /><br />I did as I was told.<br /><br />Dr. K. stuck a needle into the growth and tried to get a sample. I jumped, scratching the Chump in the process, and tried my hardest to break free. No dice! Mommy again soothed me and I settled. She stuck me again and this time got a sample. My poor growth started to bleed and bleed and bleed. <br /><br />The nice tech lady took me and held me while she stopped the bleeding. She then bandaged my paw and gave me to Mommy... SAFETY!<br /><br />Dr. K. told Mommy it would take a few days to get the cytology results back. In the meantime, she said we should treat the tumour as though it is benign. She gave her a steroid cream to put on my paw daily. She explained that if it is benign with a few months treatment that it may go away on its own and we could avoid surgery. The cream may work and it may not. She did stress that it would take at least 3-6 months. So she said treat it and let’s see what the results of the test are. Mommy agreed. <br /><br />We walked out of the office and to the truck. Mommy put me in and climbed in beside me and started to cry. She held me and just cried. I kissed her. "I love you Mommy. It’s going to be ok. You’ll see. Have faith. I really do love you Mommy." I kissed her again and again trying to calm her and sooth her obviously broken heart.<br /><br />We drove home in silence. I sat on her lap the whole way.<br /><br />She then had to call Daddy and tell him when we got home (he had to work). More tears... on both ends of the phone. They were both devastated. Mommy and I sent the day snuggling in bed. I wanted to play with Starr and Faith, but I knew Mommy needed the warmth and comfort only I could provide her.<br /><br />When Daddy came home, he picked me up and just held me... for a long time. He kept mumbling something into my fur, but it was too muffled for me to understand. "I love you Daddy."<br /><br />Later in the evening Mommy showed Daddy how to change my bandages and showed him where exactly the tumour is and what it looks like so we can monitor it. I could tell it was hard for them. <br /><br />In the days that followed Mommy and Daddy were obviously stressed and worried. I did my best to comfort them. I let them know that I love them. I also wanted to show them that I am fine, so I played with Starr and Faith and played with all my toys...... business as usual!<br /><br />Honestly, other than having this tumour on my leg and it being bandaged, you would never know anything was wrong with me. I’m not in ain and it’s not brining me down. Like I said, it’s business as usual! I’m fine!!! <br /><br />Last night (Monday night), just as we were walking out the door to go to doggy school ...I’m fine tuning my skills so I can do my CGC (Canine Good Citizen) testing... the phone rang. It was Dr. K.. Mommy couldn’t handle it so she gave the phone to Daddy. Dr. K. gave Daddy the best news ever. The tumour is benign. THANK DOG!<br /><br />She explained to Daddy that we should continue to treat it with the steroid cream for a period of 3-6 months to see if it will subside or go away on it’s own. After that time period we will revisit it and decide whether or not surgery is needed.<br /><br />Daddy hung up the phone kissed Mommy grabbed me and we had a group hug. I was kinda confused, but loving the attention and love! BOL Mommy then said that I was going to be ok and I clued in. <br /><br />So, now here I am! Outta the woods. <b> Cancer free! </b> <br /><br />I have to keep my leg bandaged for the next 3-6 months and have it changed and cream applied every day but that sure is better than having cancer and going through surgery!<br /><br />PHEW!!!! <br /><br />...thankful and blessed...Jennifer & Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16403601586663835073noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9106469316381340757.post-2237396797372774732008-01-08T09:48:00.001-08:002008-12-10T20:29:11.156-08:00Computer Mishap...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbjPTQt9X7pZR1WYsqFxms1FwpmsS_m9-Dxy1S5lYC4sZi4QldENMCiT93CMj_N2crdiwtQDy6MYojv8u2m2NhnRqSK3Nol_4cYWQjrQmqneHnwutnrDBv0Sxudhny39NH4JD_apYW4T_k/s1600-h/reportedbyfaith.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153170646388309058" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbjPTQt9X7pZR1WYsqFxms1FwpmsS_m9-Dxy1S5lYC4sZi4QldENMCiT93CMj_N2crdiwtQDy6MYojv8u2m2NhnRqSK3Nol_4cYWQjrQmqneHnwutnrDBv0Sxudhny39NH4JD_apYW4T_k/s200/reportedbyfaith.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><strong><span style="font-size:180%;">*sigh*</span></strong> </div><br /><div></div><div>We have not been able to p<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">ost</span> as often as we would have liked these p<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">ast</span> few days because we had a little computer <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">mishap</span>. We use a laptop to do all our blogging and other computer related activities. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Well, as most of you know with the holidays it has been Christmas Vacation for the kids from school. On ALL holidays, vacations, days off, and weekends our Uncle Matthew (Mommy's 12 ..almost 13.. year old brother) comes to visit and stay with us. So he was here for the 2 week break with us, which was so much fun! We ALWAYS have fun with Uncle Matthew! He's also our DDS a.k.a. Designated Dog Sitter! <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">BOL</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">BOL</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">BOL</span></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Well, one day Mommy went to use the computer and it was doing some really weird and random things. The more she investigated, the worse it got. She thought that the keys on the keypad felt funny so she asked Uncle Matthew if he had spilled something on it and he said "NO". So, Mommy waited for Daddy to get home from work to have a look at it. They both decided that they should take it to the shop to be looked at.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>So, off they went. The guy took one look at it and said something had been spilled on the keypad. UH-HUH! He opened it up and there it was..... pop!! More specifically, coke! <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">AHHH</span>! Mommy and Daddy were angry! They computer guy investigated and said that it looked like we had got lucky and no pop had got into any of the components, just on the keypad. He gave them the keypad to take home, with washing instructions, and said to wash it, let it dry and bring it back to see what would <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">happen</span>. So, they did this.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>A few days later they went back to see computer guy. He put the keypad back in played around with it and said that there don't seem to be any ill effects to the computer itself. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">YAY</span>! We're back in business! Mommy and Daddy take it home and are happy. That is until the next morning when Mommy goes to check her email and they keys are sticking and random things are happening! UGH! So, now Mommy knows how to take the keypad out and wash it, so she does it again. She lets it dry for 48 hours and p<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">uts</span> it back. SUCCESS!!! Until the next day when it starts sticking again!! </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>So here we are.... Mommy figures she will continue to try taking it out and washing it a few more times before we go to the cost of replacing the keypad. <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Hopefully</span> this will work itself out in a matter of time.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>So, this means that our computer and blogging time is going to be every few days because we have to take the keypad out and wash it then let it dry for a few days. *sigh*</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>OH!!! And how did the coke get into the keypad in the first place, you ask? The story according to Uncle Matthew goes something like this: </div><br /><div></div><br /><div><i>He was using the laptop after Mommy and Daddy went to bed. He had got a coke and had it on the coffee table. He got tired and fell asleep. The coke was sitting beside the laptop. He assumes the cat must have <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">jumped</span> on the table and knocked the glass of coke over and onto the laptop in the middle of the night. All of this unknown to any of us.</i></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Upon further investigation, Mommy did discover pop residue (a very small amount) on the coffee table and floor ... thank goodness for hardwood floors.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Needless to say, Uncle Matthew is no longer allowed to have drinks around the laptop and Mommy and Daddy take it to their room when they go to bed. </div>Jennifer & Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16403601586663835073noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9106469316381340757.post-62856521356677664402008-01-02T18:18:00.001-08:002008-12-10T20:29:11.552-08:00HAPPY NEW YEAR!!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNhr_JGrQp8Tqt6vXSvzYMzywt0VZYdJ_7w5KYWnmAL9bgHCE4w0KEE6Z3OiVK-bAMaRM2pBuRtHwx1DjxBMmozN-VStoaBb42J3yNs41SQYUYMCWLXdvpdjkCfjukuVe7LW7igPuoH7Eo/s1600-h/reportedbyaurora.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151069269214231602" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNhr_JGrQp8Tqt6vXSvzYMzywt0VZYdJ_7w5KYWnmAL9bgHCE4w0KEE6Z3OiVK-bAMaRM2pBuRtHwx1DjxBMmozN-VStoaBb42J3yNs41SQYUYMCWLXdvpdjkCfjukuVe7LW7igPuoH7Eo/s200/reportedbyaurora.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br />YAPPY 2008 FRIENDS!!<br /><br /><p>*~*Wishing you all the best for 2008*~*</p><p>2007 was a whirlwind of a year for us. YIPPIE!!!! Numerous Christmas gatherings with the family! And... some down time with Mommy and Daddy where they just spent time with US! We all snuggled in bed and watched Christmas movies! That is one of our favourite things to do!!! ♥</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Mommy and Daddy`s wedding was beautiful. They had such a wonderful time and are so happy now. Mommy says that we were so well behaved the weekend of the wedding. She was worried that we were going to be MONSTERS! bol bol bol Aparantly, we have a special surprise coming our way for being such good girls. SCORE!!! Can`t wait to find out what it is!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Christmas was, well, busy!!! There was lots of travelling here and there to see this person and that person. Needless to say, we got spoiled!!!! How can you not love Christmas and all the attention you get... bol</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>However, for Mommy and Daddy, Christmas was not all that they wanted it to be. They BOTH came down with the flu (along with everyone else they know) so they were not up to par. Despite being feverish and freequent trips to the washroom (eek!) they found a way to pull it together and spend the howlidays with our family! BRAVO! bol bol bol</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Anyway, Christmas morning at our house was different this year than others. With the wedding, there was no time for Christmas decorations and what not. Our Christmas tree didn`t get put up because Mommy and Daddy took it to the hall for the wedding. SHEESH! Nonetheless, Mommy and Daddy still got us lots of pressies and had them all set up in the livingroom on Christmas morning! YAY! This is no exception for us. With Mommy and Daddy's wedding being out of town, we will be going along with them for the trip and festivities!!! YAY! And then it will CHRISTMAS and we will be going along to visit all our family. ♥ The howliday season is so much fun.<br /><br /><br /><div align="left">With travelling in mind, we thought that we would share some travel tips with you which we got from my boyfriend <a href="http://popdogblog.blogspot.com/">Simba's</a> blog. </div><div align="left"><i></div></i><ul><li><div align="left">Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. There are a variety of wire mesh, hard plastic and soft-sided carriers available. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. And P.S., it’s smart to get your pet used to the carrier in the comfort of your home before your trip.<br /></div></li><li><div align="left">Your pet’s travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure. Don’t feed your furry friend in a moving vehicle—even if it is a long drive.<br /></div></li><li><div align="left">Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.<br /></div></li><li><div align="left">What in your pet’s traveling kit? In addition to travel papers, food, bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and a pet first-aid kit, pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity.<br /></div></li><li><div align="left">Make sure your pet wears a collar with an ID tag imprinted with your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number, and any other relevant contact information.<br /></div></li><li><div align="left">Traveling across state lines? Bring along your pet’s rabies vaccination record, as some states requires this proof at certain interstate crossings. While this generally isn’t a problem, it’s always smart to be on the safe side.<br /></div></li><li><div align="left">When it comes to H2O, we say BYO. Opt for bottled water or tap water stored in plastic jugs. Drinking water from an area he’s not used to could result in tummy upset for your pet. </div></li></ul><i><p align="left">Source: <a href="http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pets_cartraveltips">ASPCA Website</a> </i></p><p align="left"><br /><strong>Wishing you all safe and happy travels this howliday season!</strong> </p>Jennifer & Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16403601586663835073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9106469316381340757.post-86509093604777301382007-12-14T20:38:00.000-08:002008-12-10T20:29:12.376-08:00Pit Bull Christmas Carol...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTOlp0wUrOVQEMjkWuJYkRhGnUnsW-LPYfacylAiz2hBxpWOiu2h7Rvh3AD03dfTVAYDOskhrWbRXB8XILAXrSXZCvWU_fkj_07xZpHwBt-QfkrDfgvHL2i5Jc6UCo78k8MlCmcQQlhk4i/s1600-h/reportedbyfaith.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144060556897024866" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTOlp0wUrOVQEMjkWuJYkRhGnUnsW-LPYfacylAiz2hBxpWOiu2h7Rvh3AD03dfTVAYDOskhrWbRXB8XILAXrSXZCvWU_fkj_07xZpHwBt-QfkrDfgvHL2i5Jc6UCo78k8MlCmcQQlhk4i/s200/reportedbyfaith.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBnDO55-AMgghrBT-CfM2UifA6Nd_qeCRzurxScrcoPoogigTl1irE4RD1Ing7nB2Hnn4UbpDSEYP709lHEenhZiaDqSGLFcz3Za67cxzIYoEV8hN3cHS72QrTK0UZQEF7S1jjlLDGhDY1/s1600-h/reportedbyfaith.jpg"></a><br /><div>I found this while sniffing around and it hits so close to home for me that I just had to share it with all of you. I was rescued from the <a href="http://www.torontohumanesociety.com/">Toronto Humane Society</a> not long after Bill 132 - Ontario's Pit Bull Ban was passed. My Mommy and Daddy gave me a second chance and saved me from a possible unhappy ending. THEY SAVED MY LIFE!!! ♥<br /><br />-----</div><br /><div>Pit Bull Christmas Carol...<br /><br />***And a carol for us Staffies and all other bullies!!***</div><br /><div><br />T'was the night before Christmas and the shelter is dark, The whole place is silent, not even a bark. The dogs are all locked in their pens for the night, The staff has gone home and turned out the light. </div><br /><div>As I lay my head down on the cold concrete floor, I fondly recall the home I had before. The family I loved, who loved me right back, We'd share everything -- from secret to snack. Things couldn't be better at this time last year, But that has all changed and now I am here.<br /></div><div>I won't see the tree, the lights, or the snow, I'm scared and alone, my spirits are low. The others like me weren't put up for adoption, A new family and home, for us isn't an option. We've been locked up in cells as if we were crooks, We don't deserve homes because of our looks. Not Diesel, or Bingo, or the young one named Percy, Deserve to be loved nor shown any mercy.<br /></div><div>While families celebrate holiday cheer, I know in my heart that my end is near. The vet will arrive, the lights will go on, By the time you awake, we all will be gone. A stranger will come and take me away, I'll never wake to see another day. As I close my eyes I'll shed you a tear, The fondest of memories I'll always keep near.<br /></div><div>The only thing I've ever asked of Santa Claus, Is to stop all these unfair and ridiculous laws. You said without me, your life was not full, So why does it matter that I'm a "pit bull"?<br /></div><div>In my dream Santa shouts when he's finished his deed, * "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL...REGARDLESS OF BREED"</div><br /><div>-----</div><br /><div></div><div>Next time you're at your local shelter looking for a new friend, don't pass us by... </div><br /><div></div><div>SAVE A LIFE - ADOPT A BULLIE!!! ♥</div><br /><div></div><div>Here are some links that might be of interest:</div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/bsl/bill132faq.htm">Bill 132 Freequently Asked Questions</a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://guelph.ca/living.cfm?itemid=69071&smocid=2361">Bill 132: The Public Safety Related to Dogs Statute Law Amendment Act</a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca/english/about/pubs/dola-pubsfty/dola-pubsfty.asp">Information on The Dog Owners' Liability Act and Public Safety Related to Dogs Statute Law Amendment Act, 2005</a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/breederinfo11.htm">Information About BSL - Breed Specific Legislation</a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.bannedaid.com/">Banned Aid</a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.doglegislationcouncilcanada.org/">Dog Legislation Council of Canada</a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.advocatesfortheunderdog.com/">Advocates for the Underdog</a></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.bulliesinneed.ca/">Bullies In Need</a></div>Jennifer & Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16403601586663835073noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9106469316381340757.post-70857004236992699722007-12-14T05:24:00.000-08:002008-12-10T20:29:12.758-08:00A DOG'S PURPOSE - The Perspective of a 6 Year Old<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlitpqzGosqH2Z7Ym-q65A8r28zKERrjTfcT9DV7t2oNfUaH82KoW-jED49Vdj1nkM2AxhyyfHrB3-tgzi9xbirRg_lCfnIWjPEeIZr6yMYUg9Y2QFqRPYj4j6xFQyYoxQNzH96vZfcyHt/s1600-h/reportedbyaurora.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143820339712108626" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlitpqzGosqH2Z7Ym-q65A8r28zKERrjTfcT9DV7t2oNfUaH82KoW-jED49Vdj1nkM2AxhyyfHrB3-tgzi9xbirRg_lCfnIWjPEeIZr6yMYUg9Y2QFqRPYj4j6xFQyYoxQNzH96vZfcyHt/s200/reportedbyaurora.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>I was watching as Mommy opened her email today...</div><div></div><div>Mommy received this in an email and I thought it would be nice to share with you all....</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>Hope you enjoy it! ♥</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*</div><br /><div></div><br /><div><strong>A DOG'S PURPOSE - The Perspective of a 6 Year Old...</strong></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>As a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Belker</span>. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Belker</span>, and they were hoping for a miracle.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I examined <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Belker</span> and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Belker</span>, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Belker's</span> family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life --like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."</div><br /><div></div><br /><div><em>Live simply.</em></div><br /><div><em>Love generously.</em></div><br /><div><em>Care deeply.</em></div><br /><div><em>Speak kindly.</em></div><br /><div></div><br /><div><strong>Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:</strong></div><br /><div></div><br /><div>When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Take naps.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Stretch before rising.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Run, romp, and play daily.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Thrive on attention and let people touch you.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Stop when you have had enough.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Be loyal. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Never pretend to be something you're not.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Be always grateful for each new day.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div><strong><span style="font-size:130%;">ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!</span></strong></div>Jennifer & Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16403601586663835073noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9106469316381340757.post-83463417288579890832007-12-13T03:26:00.000-08:002008-12-10T20:29:12.926-08:00Tails, Feet, and Ears ... YES!!! You heard right... Eating! We have been eating some really, well, what some would concider, strange things for breakfats, dinner and snacks! Why you ask? Well, let me explain.....</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Mommy and Daddy have decided to switch us to a Prey Model diet nicknamed "Frankenprey". What that means is that we are given raw prey to eat, ecactally like a wild wolf. Since we can not hunt and kill our own prey and it isn't always easy to come across prey (whole animal including all body parts, organs, bones, etc.), Mommy and Daddy must feed us "frankenprey" which is human made prey. This means that Mommy must make "prey in a bowl" for us. A meal will include meaty meat, bones, organs and anything else "juicy" that Mommy can get her hands on. Sounds kinda yucky, but boy is it YUMMY to us!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Our switch was not made hastily. Mommy spent many hours pouring over information... reading books, doing research online, talking to experts and people who feed raw before deciding, after about 6 monmths, that raw was the way to go for us. Even as we go, we are all still learning about raw feeding and the Prey Model diet.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>So, what have we been eating you ask? </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Here is a list of things that we have had in the past few weeks:</div><br /><ul><br /><li><strong>CHICKEN:</strong> breasts (boneless and bone-in), quarters, wings, backs, necks, hearts, feet</li><br /><li><strong>BEEF:</strong> roasts (all different cuts), stewing beef bones, ribs (all different cuts), ground beef, tongue, bleached honeycomb tripe, liver</li><br /><li><strong>PORK:</strong> chops (all different cuts), roasts (all different cuts), ribs (all different cuts), kidneys, feet, tails</li><br /><li><strong>LAMB:</strong> shoulder chops</li><br /><li><strong>GOAT:</strong> random pieces</li><br /><li><strong>SMELTS: </strong>gutted and deheaded with bone in</li></ul><br /><p>Here is a list of some of the things in the freezer we are waiting to try:</p><br /><ul><br /><li><strong>CHICKEN:</strong> whole chicken, frames, gizzards</li><br /><li><strong>BEEF:</strong> lung, heart</li><br /><li><strong>PORK:</strong> hocks, snout, ears, liver, stomach</li><br /><li><strong>STEWING HEN:</strong> whole hen</li><br /><li><strong>TURKEY: </strong>breast (bone-in), wings, thighs, drums, feet, gibblets</li><br /><li><strong>QUAIL:</strong> whole quail</li><br /><li><strong>SALMON: </strong>heads</li><br /><li><strong>MACKERAL:</strong> whole mackeral</li><br /><li><strong>CORNISH HEN:</strong> whole hen</li><br /><li><strong>DUCK:</strong> whole duck</li></ul><br /><p>Here is a list of some of the things we are looking for to try:</p><br /><ul><br /><li><strong>CHICKEN:</strong> heads, ground chicken</li><br /><li><strong>BEEF:</strong> green tripe, brains</li><br /><li><strong>PORK:</strong> brains, testicles, ground pork</li><br /><li><strong>LAMB:</strong> roast, leg, organs, ground lamb</li><br /><li><strong>GOAT:</strong> roast, leg, organs, ground goat</li><br /><li><strong>RABBIT:</strong> whole, all parts, organs, etc.</li><br /><li><strong>OTHER WILD GAME:</strong> all parts, organs, etc.</li><br /><li><strong>OTHER FISH:</strong> all parts, organs etc.</li><br /><li><strong>SWEETBREADS</strong></li></ul><br /><p>Are you grossed out yet? Mommy and Daddy thought it was pretty gross, but now they love feeding us our meet. They have broadened their horizians and have been trying new things since starting us on our diet. YAY MOMMY & DADDY!</p><br /><p>Here are some basic Prey Model guidelines:</p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;"><strong>Why feed raw?</strong> </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Prey model feeders feel that dogs are physiologically carnivores. Dogs have been shown by geneticists to be a variation of the grey wolf. They differ by 0.2% in the mitochondrial DNA (and I suspect much of this difference has to do with coloring and shape and size). </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- David Mech, the forefront wolf biologist who has studied them intensely in their own natural habitat (not an artificial wolf colony), has observed that as natural carnivores, the wolf's diet consists mostly of large prey, and supplemented by smaller prey in leaner times, and very occasionally, he'll notice some vegetation grazing, but again only during extremely lean times. Wolves are carnivores. They CAN subsist on non-meat products, but by and large, they need raw prey to thrive and reproduce. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- So by trying to appropriate a whole prey through feeding of various body parts, we feed what the dog has been designed by nature to eat. Because the dog's physiology is designed to be carnivorous, this is what we feed them. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Physiology: </span></em></p><br /><ul><br /><li><em><span style="font-size:85%;">no grinding molars (all sharp scissor like teeth)</span></em></li><br /><li><em><span style="font-size:85%;">strong wide jaws to really open up, take in a large piece, and crunch down and gnaw </span></em></li><br /><li><em><span style="font-size:85%;">no amylase in the saliva to begin digestion, and therefore, very acidic stomach juices (at about 1 - 2 on the litmus scale, 7 being neutral - humans' stomach acidity is only around 5) </span></em></li><br /><li><em><span style="font-size:85%;">very short digestive tract to keep food moving along out </span></em></li><br /><li><em><span style="font-size:85%;">not to mention they are natural hunters, every dog has an instinct to hunt - this instinct is part and parcel of being a carnivore. I don't see wolves stalking a berry branch... </span></em></li></ul><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- By that logic, because a dog/wolf is designed to feed the way they do in teh wild, evolution has shown us this is path of least resistance. To ask your dog to eat what they're not biologically designed to do is therefore providing obstacles along the path of least resistance. To many rawfeeders, this is basically asking for trouble. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;"><strong>How much to feed?</strong> </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Essentially, most dogs require about 2 - 3% of their body in raw food to maintain good health and weight. Working dogs may require more, some furry couch warmers may require 1%. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- This amount that you determine what your dog does well on is a trial and error kind of thing. Most people start with 2%, then either feed more or back up depending on how their dog's body feels. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- The amount does NOT have to be the exact same amount every day. Some days you can certainly feed more, then feed slightly less the next day to compensate for the larger amount of food prior. Some people feed the gorge/fast method, where they allow their dogs to eat two or three times the daily amount, then just fast their dogs the next day or however long, to compensate again for the larger amount. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Know your dog. I have a self-regulator on my hands who generally will only eat about twice the daily amount even though there may be five days worth of food sitting in front of her in the form of a goat leg. She won't fast herself the next day, she'll just eat slightly less than normal. Again, use the dog's body and energy level as a guideline. Looking porky? back off on the amount, and feed slightly less fatty if necessary. (Although fat is an integral part of the diet...) </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- You can feed once a day, or twice a day. It's up to you. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Puppies? Most raw prey model feeders feed 2 - 3% of the projected adult body weight. So a little GSD puppy, who may grow to be 80 lbs, will still be fed about 2% of the 80 lbs as a puppy. Just spaced out over a few feedings since puppies do better wiht more frequent feedings. Once they hit about 6 mths, you can back off to twice a day, and once a year old, you can do once a day, or even the gorge/fast if that's what you prefer. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;"><strong>What to include in the diet?</strong> </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">-Prey model feeders don't generally feed anything other than raw meat, edible bone, and organs. We don't think veggies form a necessary part of the diet because a) we subscribe to dogs being carnivores following their physiology; b) veggies and fruit form only about 1% of the grey wolf's natural diet - it's more like grazing on a sweet berry if it's there. Kiind of like the way I like to nosh on candy. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- The ratio of meat/bone/organs is 80%/10%/10%. Half the organ allotment is liver, following the notion that the liver is the largest internal secreting organ. We use this ratio as kind of the general ratio that most prey animals are in their makeup. It may vary, of course, and again, this 80/10/10 ratio is a guideline, but really most animals are made in ratios not too far from this one. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Meat: this is muscle meats. Muscle attached to bones, and also parts of the body that are organs, but are muscular in nature (non-secreting). This includes, tongue, heart, gizzards, trachea, skin (yes skin secretes, but it secretes waste through water and salt aka sweat OUT of the body, so we don't count that, hee.) I count stomach as a muscle meat, but in keeping to form with the whole prey, I don't stomach as the main part of the meat ratio - so despite how much Summer adores green tripe, she only gets it a couple times a week. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Edible bone: we consider weight-bearing bones of large animals as teeth breakers and not very edible. Edible bones tend to be less dense, more porous. Depending on the size of the dog, edible bones range from chickens, to turkey, to duck, to fish, to rabbit, to pork, to goat, to lamb. Some powereaters do manage to chew off the ends of beef ribs. It's a Know Thy Dog situation. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">- Secreting organs: liver should be half the organ allotment. The rest can be made up of kidney, spleen, thymus, pancreas, lung, testicles (mountain oysters), brains. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">NOTE: remember, we call it prey model, because those of us who can't feed whole prey, we try to appropriate the whole prey through various body parts at various times. It's a prey built over time. Frankenprey, as many people call it. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">So again, this ratio can be met over time. It helps me to know how much Summer eats in a week, roughly, then cut up hunks of organs that make up 10% of the weekly amount. Then these organ hunks can be fed throughout the week. This way, I know in each week, Summer is getting 10% of organs in her diet, and half of this is liver. (So the 10% organ amount is divided into 4 smaller hunks, and twice a week, she gets a liver hunk, and twice a week she gets other organ hunks. I space out the variety to give it more balance.) </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">Another note about edible bone - most store bought cuts of meat with bone in them tend to be high in bone. So even if you see a nice pork shoulder roast covered in gobs of meat, the bone in there probably makes up about 15 - 20% of the piece. Store bought whole chickens have been gutted and de-feathered, so the bone ratio tends to be a little higher than real whole prey. I like to feed more meat when I find what I'm feeding Summer may possibly have too much bone in there. (Which is most of the time.) How to tell? Look at the writing in the poop! If your dog is straining slightly, and the poops come out crumbly and powdery and once they hit the ground, they fall apart, that's generally too much bone. If the poops are squishy and have no form (NOT diarrhea), then feed a tad more bone. It doesn't take a huge bone tweak to make a difference in the poop. </span></em></p><br /><p><em><span style="font-size:85%;">Source: <a href="http://www.dogster.com/forums/Food_and_Nutrition/thread/399577">Dogster.com Food & Nutrition Fourm post by Summer: Raw Prey Model Guidelines</a></span></em></p><br /><p>Here are some websites about Raw Feeding:</p><br /><p><a href="http://www.rawmeatybones.com/">Vet Dr Tom Lonsdale's Website</a></p><br /><p><a href="http://rawfed.com/myths/">Myths About Raw Feeding</a></p><br /><p><a href="http://mypetcarnivore.com/">My Pet Carnivore</a></p><br /><p><a href="http://www.usrmb.net/">United States Raw Meaty Bones</a></p>Jennifer & Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16403601586663835073noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9106469316381340757.post-60262536819415183622007-12-10T14:36:00.000-08:002008-12-10T20:29:13.046-08:00THANK YOU TO ALL OUR PALS...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ2QDieCfPRYamt2OqAC0B3TTPgo_TKaIj3X8A-x5tT-X6DVKMVb5lEjhD2_QE4zHSeauDLa5QRE-xTOP7IWBJPOdsXv3MVIhorrDI8-XQ8iiu9yl7EwztG6KDq6bcA5ZUStNwxPmsSXsy/s1600-h/reportedbyaurora.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142478754296319586" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ2QDieCfPRYamt2OqAC0B3TTPgo_TKaIj3X8A-x5tT-X6DVKMVb5lEjhD2_QE4zHSeauDLa5QRE-xTOP7IWBJPOdsXv3MVIhorrDI8-XQ8iiu9yl7EwztG6KDq6bcA5ZUStNwxPmsSXsy/s200/reportedbyaurora.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>We have been receiving the most beautiful Christmas cards in the mail from all our pals. This is also where our Great Grandma and Grandpa live. Naturally, Mommy took me along for the weekend because I am just too cute and adorable to leave at home! ♥</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Saturday night we went down and went to bed as soon as we got there because it was pretty late. Sunday morning when we got up, I went running out of the bedroom, down the hall and into the kitchen to see .... GREAT GRANDMA! YIPPIE! She was so surprised to see me because she didn't know Mommy and Daddy were bringing me along and she was already in bed when we got there the night before. She scooped me up and gave me lots of hugs and kisses and even a little piece of toast crust! YUM!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>After getting lovings from GG'ma I went outside to do my "thang". OH MY! I had forgot just how large their property is! Talk about wide open spaces to run and play. Acres and acres for Tinkie to run! And that's EXACTLY what I did. I ran and ran until I could run no more! Well, I could run no more because I didn't have my boots on and my little paws were getting cold. So, I came in and looked at Mommy. "Where's breakfast?"</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>She served me a wonderful breakfast: 3oz of raw meet. YUMM! Yes, we are on the "frankenprey" raw diet. What was in my bowl you ask? Well, there was a piece of chicken back with the bones, because bones are part of the diet, ya know. There was also a small pieces of beef liver and pork kidney and I think I tasted a tiny piece of lamp chop in there too! I gobbled down my breakfast in 2 seconds flat! Poor GG'ma thought I was going to choke myself! But, I was fine because I know what I'm doing when it comes to my YUMMY breakfast!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>After breakfast Mommy got my toys out and GG'pa and Daddy played with me while Mommy and GG'ma got ready for church ... whatever that is. I'm not quite sure because I'm not allowed to go there with them. So off all my humans headed. They were gone for about a few hours. I took the time to spread out on my blankie in front of the ginormous window and enjoy what little sun I could get! </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I was out cold in a deep sleep when they came in making all kinds of racket! But, I didn't let that stop me from perking up and getting my lovings when they all come in. Boy, do I love being the center of attention! ♥ They ALL played with me for awhile before they started to do stuff! I followed Mommy and GG'ma around as they did their "tasks".</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>In the afternoon the door bell rang! ARRRRROOOOO ARRROOO ARRRRRROOOOOOOO I had to alert my humans that an intruder was entering the house. Mommy told me to shush that it was just Rev. Parsons from the church who was here to do the pre wedding "counseling" with Mommy and Daddy. ARRRROOOO ARRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOO ARRROOOOOO I wasn't sure what to make of this character. He was kinda funny looking. He tired to give me lovings, but I wasn't too sure. Mommy told me that he was from the church and he is a very nice man, but I still wasn't sure. ARRROOOO ARRROOO ARRRRRROOOOOOO So, GG'ma and GG'pa took me downstairs with them while Mommy and Daddy sat with this Rev. guy upstairs.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>After what seemed like forever Mommy came downstairs and said Rev. Parsons had left and told me to come upstairs so I could go outside. SCORE! Time to run zoomies!! I did some serious zoomies around and around and around the house and I even make pupangels in the snow! ♥ Rolling in the snow is so much fun!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Anyway, after suppertime Daddy packed the care while GG'ma and GG'pa gave me some lovings and said goodbye. We, me, Mommy and Daddy, go in the care and made the long drive home. I was so excited when I got home and saw my sisters. We went in the yard and ran zoomies and rolled in the snow. I like my time away from them, but I miss them too. I told them all about my fun time at GG'ma and GG'pa's and they told me about their fun weekend with Uncle Matthew. I forgot to mention that he stayed at our house with them.</div>Jennifer & Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16403601586663835073noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9106469316381340757.post-60632095998848078272007-12-07T17:28:00.000-08:002008-12-10T20:29:13.352-08:00Secret Santa Paws Has Arrived<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjGSraOrav1WRfOZeyB_vFTJ6RiDl8yDwFzTzeSPjdaLY7wkCQgtApVwzSSO4gawhwvjy3MdVwDvOCJ93O9sh0K5ejDHJUHBMAndedXgL1xdyKJhi_xm29CPrgQ-wKKM22H1f9FbiwcR8Q/s1600-h/reportedbyfaith.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141408182158184002" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjGSraOrav1WRfOZeyB_vFTJ6RiDl8yDwFzTzeSPjdaLY7wkCQgtApVwzSSO4gawhwvjy3MdVwDvOCJ93O9sh0K5ejDHJUHBMAndedXgL1xdyKJhi_xm29CPrgQ-wKKM22H1f9FbiwcR8Q/s200/reportedbyfaith.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>*zoomies* </div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>My Secret Santa Paws gift arrived today!</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div>In one of my groups on <a href="http://www.dogster.com/">Dogster</a> called <a href="http://www.dogster.com/group/Min_pin_manchester_mania-12">MPMM - Min Pin Manchester Mania</a> we are having a Secret Santa Paws gift exchange.
